LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)

During the summer of 1999, a new directory architecture based upon LDAP displaced the original campus Ph directory system. Unlike Ph, LDAP allows multiple servers to be used for redundancy and to distribute queries for scalability and survivability. In order to protect the contents of this directory and promote security, unauthorized replication of this data is not permitted.

The campus LDAP directory is flexible enough to evolve over times. New fields can be introduced into existing records should the need arise. Some applications require the existence of specific fields within this directory in order to perform queries (ex: Outlook and NetMeeting). If a department has the need to include additional fields, contact CISS for more information.

If a department has a need to use the central LDAP directory for user authentication, it must contact CISS to become authorized. Only authorized hosts may use this database for authentication. This practice helps to protect the directory from potential security breaches. The campus mail system, dialup system, and many SSL based applications use this directory database for user authentication.

Active Directory

In addition to the user directory, a new directory service will be emerging on campus by the summer of 2001. This new directory service is based upon Microsoft Active Directory Services (ADS). A committee structure composed of representation across campus is developing this project for the University. Departments or users that are interested in this project can find more information about this initiative at the Windows and Office 2000 Implementation web site.
