What is wireless ISUnet?

Wireless ISUnet is a wireless ethernet environment that allows a mobile computer to connect to ISUnet without wires. This service is based upon IEEE 802.11b radio technology and is available to all current faculty, staff, and students. For more information on ISUnet Wireless, please view information under RESOURCES, DOCUMENTATION, under the PRESENTATIONS heading.

When will wireless ISUnet be supported?

A pilot program was created for wireless ISUnet in 2001 to gain experience with connectivity and find solutions that can provide access for the most diverse products while at the same time maintain a secure environment. After extensive research, wireless ISUnet is ready for release to the University community. It will formally be available as a production service as of August 18, 2003.

Where will wireless ISUnet be available?

Wireless ISUnet service has been deployed in a variety of public spaces throughout campus. Check the online campus map for details. Since wireless ISUnet is still in the deployment stage, check the map periodically for updates as service areas expand. Only Telecommunications and Networking may deploy wireless connectivity on ISUnet due to security and radio spectrum concerns.

Is wireless ISUnet secure?

To gain access to wireless ISUnet, a valid ULID and password are required for authentication. Once authenticated, traffic passed over the wireless network is encrypted between the client and the network to prevent eavesdropping. To prevent the encryption from being cracked, keys are rotated at regular intervals. This model is based on current standards and is scalable throughout the campus network.

What can I access with wireless ISUnet?

Wireless ISUnet has been developed to target users with mobile computers that have mobility needs. Services such as electronic mail, the campus portal, web browsing, and more can be accessed from wireless ISUnet. Wireless ISUnet is not intended for fixed location desktop computers due to scaling challenges with bandwidth and radio spectrum in a wireless environment. It is also not recommended to use peer-to-peer file sharing, software distribution, or bandwidth intense video applications in a wireless environment.

How do I connect to wireless ISUnet?

To access wireless ISUnet, your mobile computer will need to have a compatible wireless ethernet card installed. These cards can be purchased through STSS separately or bundled with new laptops. Not all wireless cards will work with wireless ISUnet; see details regarding wireless information on the University Helpdesk Web site. For Windows-based mobile computers, you will need to obtain and install the Aegis client software (located on the InternetTools 2003 CD or download it from the campus FTP server). For MacOS based mobile computers, you will need to install an Airport wireless ethernet card and the associated Airport software (also available on the campus FTP server). Only TNSS can install wireless access points to provide coverage on campus.

Is there a cost for wireless ISUnet?

It is our goal to deploy wireless ISUnet in public spaces throughout the University where mobile computing devices will be used. Eventually, we will target other spaces that are less public, which will incur a fee associated with installing and maintaining wireless coverage. End users will not be charged a fee for accessing this network.
